website investigation
potential threats to data
foreword
In the current age, information itself is a highly valuable commodity. In fact, you will be very surprised at the length some people will go to get personal information about others. The majority of organisations hold personal information about others either legally or illegally these are also known as data controllers.
At the time of writing, protection of identity is a very controversial topic in the political arena. Our government is currently pushing a bill through parliament to start the implementation of a national identity card scheme. The debate derives from concern about eroding civil liberties, and a general shift in the balance of power between the state and the individual, who is presumed not to be whom he or she says they are unless proved otherwise.
The number of identity thefts has risen tremendously over the last decade and inevitably this has been linked with the increase in the use of transactional websites. Therefore every consumer website needs to provide customers with a secure approach to business and have sufficient safety measures in place to store away any other data that has been supplied by the customer in the purchasing process.
In this report I will firstly describe potential threats to customer data collected via eBuyer’s website. Afterwards, I will describe the techniques used to protect these sensitive records, including any impinging legislation. Then finally and conclusively, I will attempt to assess how effective these measures actually are.
