Navigation explained

I have designed a navigational system tailor-made for the audience and purpose. It is simple, intuitive and takes full consideration of user interactivity and interface consistancy as all HCIs should.

I based the design on the church's external notice board pictured below:

It has a hierarchical structure to it, split into seven partitions. Home, About Us, Articles & Audio, Bookstall & Library, Children, Contact Us and FIEC.

When a user rolls over a partition of the menu system, it will change into a slightly paler blue. When the user clicks on it will turn white and remain white until the user goes to another section of the website. The image above was created in Adobe Fireworks 8. When turned into CSS and XHTML it will form the basis of the first prototype. Getting the navigation and the overall theme right is the first step I'm taking in this evolutionary-delivery method encouraged by the specification.

Basing the theme on the church notice board provides the website with a consistant 'image'. The website itself will also hopefully help give the church greater identity and authenticity in the local community.

Sub-navigation

Due to the fact that there will more than one page in each section of the website, it is necessary to create a sub-navigational system that only appears when a particlar section of the website has been selected. I have design two different systems which I will test out on two different prototypes.

The first is a horizontial version. This will be tested in version 2.0.

The second is a vertical menu. This will be tested in version 3.0.

User feedback will be the key. However, I will almost certainly have to use the vertical system for the articles and audio section of the website because of the large quantity of content that will be there.
